General Information
About Acne
Acne is a common
skin ailment, which appears in about 85% of the population between
12 and 30 years of age. It also can occur in latter years,
especially in women after 45 due to their hormonal imbalance. Acne
is exhibited as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts or nodules.
It can be located on the face, upper arms, chest, back and
neck.
Recent research
has shown that increased levels of the male hormone, testosterone,
which is present in both males and females, produces growth in the
sebaceous glands of the skin, increasing the production of sebum (a
lipid mixture containing squalene and wax esters, as well as
cholesterol esters, triglycerides, and possibly some free
cholesterol). The research has shown that increased sebum excretion
is a major factor involved in the pathophysiology (the functional
changes associated with or resulting from disease or injury) of
acne.
Women often
experience an aggravation of acne in the week before their menstrual
period begins. Hormonal medications (i.e. steroids, birth control
pills) may also have an effect on acne. It was also shown that
estrogens (female hormones) exhibit an inhibitory effect on
excessive sebaceous gland activity. Menopause is associated with
estrogen deficiency, which might be responsible for many skin
problems including acne breakout. Rosacea (redness and red bumps
which appeared after 40 years of age can be miss judged as acne.
The sebaceous gland becomes bigger, sebum is highly secreted.
Therefore, there is more probability that the pores may block. In
the same time the skin cells are rapidly shed leaving place for new
ones; more cell debris, more sebum, more pores blockage. This is
one of the most important factors for the apparition of whiteheads
and blackheads. The blackheads are actually cells debris and sebum
which are involved in the oxidation processes. In these reactions
melatonin (a hormone that is involved in skin coloration) is also
involved. Some of these pores blockage are perfect place for
bacteria to grow causing pimples.
Things
that can aggravate your acne:
Some foods can
trigger the worsening of acne such as: excessive sugar, chocolate,
caffeine, carbonated beverages, milk products, seafood, trans fats,
fried and salt. If you feel this is true for you, then avoid those
foods. Some cosmetics can trigger acne by causing acne to flare
without causing blackheads. These cosmetics usually contain mineral
oils or other chemical compounds that irritate and clog the pores.
Acne routine treatments :
The treatments used for acne are Salicilic acid, Bezoyl peroxide,
Sulfur and Resorcinol for normal and light acne. For a very late
stage and bad acne isotretinoin and corticosteroids are used. All
these treatments dry out the skin or have unpleasant side effects.
When you are ready for a natural treatment you should avoid those
chemicals. The skin can dry out, become sensitive making it
vulnerable to infection, rashes, itchiness and eczema. In the same
time wrinkles and aging process are speeding up.
Factors
to consider when treating acne :
There are several factors which you should consider when starting
the acne treatment. First of all the face has to be thoroughly
cleansed. Don't use any chemical cleansers which will dry out your
skin. Use instead mild soap such as liquid Castile soap or glycerin
enriched with different oils such as Coconut oil, Palm oil, Olive
oil, Grape seed oil.
-
Eat balanced diet plenty of fruits and vegetables.
-
Drink
plenty of water to eliminate your bodily toxins.
-
Try to have at least 8 hours of sleep.
-
Don't use makeup, which clog the pores.

If you have blackheads rub your face with
Jojoba oil
prior to a
face steaming with Chamomile or Yarrow. You can
prepare a herb infusion (4 tea spoons in 4 caps of boiled water).
Let steep for 15-20 minutes. Place the infusion in a jar and
carefully place your face nearby to feel
the vapors. Your face should be placed at such distance where you
feel the vapors but they cannot harm you in any way. After 10
minutes you can use a very clean towel and gently press your blackheads
which will come easily out. If they don’t come out in the first
place don’t over try. They are too deep inside the skin. You have to
wait for another steaming procedure. You can use the steam every
week until all the blackheads are gone.
