General Information about Eczema :
Eczema affects
about 15% of the population.
Eczema is an inflammation of the skin and may be associated with an
allergic reaction, although the cause is often unknown. The most
common cause of all eczemas is due to the inherited tendency for
developing allergies and is associated with asthma and hay fever.
Other types of eczema can be caused by irritants such as, chemicals
and detergents, allergens, such as nickel, and yeast growths.
. If you are allergic and are continually exposed to those allergens
the rash may spread and eczema is aggravating.
Eczema affects people of all ages.
Types
of Eczema:
Infantile
eczema
affects babies under one year old. Also referred to as cradle cap,
it usually starts on the scalp or the diaper area and quickly
spreads. Although this type of eczema looks unpleasant, it is not
sore or itchy and does not cause the baby to feel uncomfortable or
unwell. Normally this type of eczema will clear in just a few
months.
Childhood
eczema is sometimes found behind the knee or in the bend of an
elbow and will often clear up by the time the child reaches puberty.
Eczema affects more than 15 million Americans and ten percent of all
children have eczema.
Adult
seborrhoreic eczema
affects adults between 20 and 40. It is usually seen on the scalp as
mild dandruff, but can spread to the face, ears and chest. The skin
becomes red, inflamed and starts to flake. It is commonly
accompanied by yellowish, oily, scaly patches of skin on the scalp,
face, and occasionally other parts of the body. It is thought that
the yeast pityrosporum ovale largely causes this condition. If the
condition becomes infected, treatment with an anti-fungal cream may
be necessary.
Discoid
eczema, usually found in adults, has well-defined edge and is
red. On top there are often small blisters, scales or crusts. This
often reflects the fact that they are infected with bacteria. The
lesions are very itchy, so thickening of the skin (lichenification)
is common. Because of their well-defined margins, lesions of discoid
eczema can be confused for fungal infections of the skin.
Varicose
eczema can be caused by a blood circulatory problem in the legs.
It affects the ankles, which become speckled, itchy and inflamed. A
common problem that is associated with varicose ulcers is contact
allergic eczema caused by medications applied to the skin such as
steroids, topical antibiotics, lanolin and also preservatives in
various preparations. If this is suspected, skin patch testing may
help to identify the problematic substance.
Allergic
contact eczema develops when the body’s immune system reacts
against a substance in contact with the skin. The allergic reaction
often develops over a period of time through repeated contact with
the substance. For example, an allergic reaction may occur to
nickel, which is often found in earrings, belt buckles and jeans
buttons. Reactions can also occur after contact with other
substances such as perfumes and rubber. In order to prevent repeated
reactions it is best to prevent contact with anything that you know
causes a rash.
Irritant
contact eczema. This is a type of eczema caused by frequent
contact with everyday substances, such as detergents and chemicals,
which are irritating to the skin. It most commonly occurs on the
hands of adults and can be prevented by avoiding the irritants and
keeping the skin moisturized. Symptoms include scaling and
thickening of the skin. Itching occurs where the skin has been in
contact with a particular allergen such as cosmetics or nickel in
jewelry or irritants such as soap or water. In two thirds of contact
dermatitis cases the hands are involved because of sensitizing
agents the sufferer has encountered at work.
